A Success Story – Janice Rideout

“I’m doing more than just a job. I have a purpose”. These are the words of former Futureworx client Janice Rideout, who successfully secured employment with the support of Futureworx and an Employment Nova Scotia wage subsidy program. Janice was hired by manager Ross Young at Corridor Community Options for Adults (CCOA) for a position which was funded under the START Program.

The START program encourages employers to hire Nova Scotians requiring work experience. Financial incentives are provided to employers with a labour need willing to support ready-to-work Nova Scotians.

Janice had been actively job searching with the support of the Futureworx Job Search Centre in Elmsdale and had been having difficulties finding employment. She had been a stay-at-home mother for five years and was finding her lack of current employment experience to be a barrier to employment. She applied to many advertised positions. However, she found many positions she qualified for required shift work, which was not possible due to her family obligations.

Janice’s Case Manager had been discussing and promoting the START Program with CCOA manager, Ross Young, and he felt the program was suited to his needs. He needed to hire an employee for their thrift store, Rick’s Riches. However, the organization required financial support to hire someone.

“Without the START program we would not have been able to take a chance and hire anyone on our own because we would not have had the budget for it,” says Ross.

Janice interviewed for the position at CCOA and Ross felt she would be an ideal fit for their organization.

“If it wasn’t for Futureworx I would never have been able to do a professional interview on my own,” Janice states when thinking back on her participation in an Interview Survival Skills workshop just prior to her interview. “It’s nice to be back in the workforce and this job makes me feel important. It’s been an awesome experience and the crowd here is awesome. The support I receive is great!”

Janice also expressed how using START and securing this position has helped her gain a lot of confidence in herself and her abilities

Ross highlighted several positive interactions he had as a result of START including the experience with the Program Officer at Employment Nova Scotia who assisted Ross with the application process. Ross is also grateful to Futureworx for providing him with advice and information regarding the START program. Futureworx also assisted him with finding the perfect candidate, who was “direct match” client referred by a Case Manager.
