A Success Story – Tyler Sutherland

“It’s been a good experience” are the words used by Tyler Sutherland to describe his work at the Corridor Co-op Grocery Store in Milford, NS.  Tyler was hired at the Co-op by manager Mike Wray through a program called Opportunities Funds, which offers support for hiring persons with disabilities through a wage subsidy. This program allows time for the employer to train a new employee who might need extra time to learn new skills required to do the job.

Leading up to this partnership, Tyler was searching for a job with no luck. He sat at home for weeks and believes he would still be sitting at home without the option of the Opportunities Fund. Tyler approached Mike to inquire about the possibility of volunteering at the Co-op store and told Mike about the funding opportunities that were available for employers hiring a new employee who might require some extra time and training. Tyler put Mike in touch with a Career Practitioner at the Futureworx Job Search Centre in Elmsdale who was working with Tyler at the time. Through Employment Solutions, the Career Practitioner was able to process the paperwork required for the wage subsidy. The subsidy lasted several months and gave Tyler work experience he might not have otherwise obtained.

Tyler continues to work at the Co-op even though the subsidy has ended. He says he would recommend the program to others struggling to secure employment, especially those living with a disability.

“It’s been a good Job,” says Tyler. “I now have job experience to add to my resume and a good reference”.

Wray says he’s noticed a huge transformation in Tyler since he first started. He says Tyler’s confidence has increased and he now requires only minimal supervision. Wray adds Tyler has become very versatile and can work in various departments of the store.  He says the experience has been beneficial to Tyler in helping him with “determining his strengths.”

Wray says he can definitely see the benefits of a program like Opportunities Funds for both the employer and the potential employee. He highly recommends it to other employers and encourages them to get involved and not be afraid of the word “disability”.  He says Tyler has been able to learn the skills required to work as a Grocery Clerk and he fits in very well with all of his staff.

“There are many more success stories that involve partnerships like the one between Futureworx, Employment Solutions, Opportunities Funds and the Corridor Co-op,” says Tim Tucker, manager of the Futureworx Job Search Centre in Elmsdale. “Thanks to managers like Mike Wray and options like Opportunities Funds, Tyler has been able to not only gain the work experience he needs but has gained much more than that in the way of confidence and life skills.”
