Program: Phoenix Youth Shelter provides free, safe, emergency accommodations to youth ages 16-24. The Shelter supplies daily essentials (food, clothing, shelter, etc.) around the clock to youth who seek support.

Wage: A competitive wage, Employee and Family Assistance Program, in-house trainings and professional development opportunities.

Hours of Work:  Full-Time Position: 40 hours weekly based on a schedule of: Friday 12am-8am, Saturday 8pm-8am, Sunday 8pm-8am and Monday 11pm-7am.

Part-Time Position: 40 hours bi-weekly based on a schedule of: Thursday 12a-8a, Friday 11p-7a, Saturday 4p-12a, Sunday 4p-12a and Monday 12a-8a.

Location: Tower Rd., Halifax

Reports to: Manager, Phoenix Youth Shelter

Screening Requirements: This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Ensure the program delivery is congruent with Phoenix’s mission, vision and philosophy.

·         Work in accordance with Phoenix’s policies, procedures and philosophy of practice.

·         Supervise and monitor the program’s overnight activities and ensure that policies, security and safety are maintained.

·         Provide support and crisis intervention for youth.

·         Maintain wakefulness for entire shift.

·         Fulfill significant cooking and cleaning responsibilities.

·         Contribute to building maintenance to ensure a therapeutic milieu.

·         Complete and maintain all logs, files and records as required and ensure confidentiality is protected.

·         Complete assigned tasks.

·         Enter statistical data in the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System (database).

·         Communicate overnight activities with daytime staff.

·         Train new staff and field placement students as required.

 

Other Requirements :

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Demonstrated high level of understanding of youth development and the issues of homelessness.

·         Demonstrated exceptional level of interpersonal and youth service skills.

·         Demonstrated skill using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach and a social justice perspective).

·         Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.

·         Comfort and ability to work independently.

·         Physical ability to lift light loads, walk up and down stairs, and maintain a fairly active pace.

·         Ability to work in a team environment.

·         Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and using the Internet.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system is an asset.

·         Bachelor of Social Work, or an undergraduate degree and Human Services diploma or other relevant undergraduate degree.

·         Registration or Candidacy for registration, certification or membership of a related professional body if applicable.

·         Experience working in a youth residential setting.

·         Non-violent crisis intervention, suicide intervention, standard first aid and Phoenix medication dispensing training or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired.

·         Experience supervising staff, field placement students and/or volunteers is an asset.

·         Experience working for a non-profit organization is an asset.

Salary Range: 20.00 per hour

Recently our Employer Engagement Specialist from Colchester was invited by the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs to join them and other community leaders/organizations for an interactive morning at the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council Trades Exhibition Hall. This hall is a unique venue that offers students, job seekers, employment counsellors, teachers, and the general public an opportunity to experience construction occupations in a tangible way.

The Hall features 14 interactive exhibits (booths) where visitors can learn about construction careers by participating in a variety of hands-on demonstrations and speaking with industry professionals at different stages of their careers. A few examples of the booths are: Boilermaker, Bricklayer, Carpenter/Millwright, Electrician, Management, Operating Engineer, and Sheet Metal Worker.
